Welcome!
This blog will document my journey through 50 states in 50 weeks. It will also focus on my emotional states as the trip progresses. Traveling is one of the most exciting things you can do, but it's also lonely. I hope that, through a mixture of adventure and quiet reflection, I will emerge from this experience more in touch with who I am, better able to articulate what I want out of life.

So, What's the Plan?
I will select a city in each state and stay there Monday through Friday, then drive to the next destination over the weekend. I will continue to work on the trip, which means that most of my exploration of the places I stay will take place in the evenings - bars, restaurants, live music, etc. The obvious destinations in each state will be avoided where possible, as well as places I've visited before. I will make the most of the road time, looking for opportunities to stop and see unique or interesting sites along the way. Suggestions are always welcome!
I will post at least twice per week: once focusing on the location and another on my frame of mind at that point of the trip. Other random posts (brain farts) will appear when I am so moved. I will also post more frequently to Instagram @50statesofmatt.
Because of work travel and family obligations, I won't be able to pull this off in 50 consecutive weeks. I suspect it will be more like 65 after all is said and done. I also reserve the right to stay longer than a week if I love it somewhere. 50 states in 50 weeks has a nice ring to it and works as a framework, but I'll remain open to whatever comes along.
